The history of Rockstar Games

From a part-time studio in Dundee to the most anticipated game ever made: how Rockstar was built, studio by studio and game by game.

In shortConfirmed

Grand Theft Auto began at DMA Design, founded in Dundee by David Jones. Take-Two bought the GTA rights and then DMA itself, and in December 1998 created Rockstar Games in New York, led by Sam and Dan Houser. Rockstar has since grown to ten studios and released GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA VI follows on November 19, 2026.
